Accepted Lung-Rot and Worse

A ruined life is not acceptable. [Former US vice-president Hubert Humphreys]

They have poisoned the Thames and killed the fish in the river. A little further development of the same wisdom and science will complete the poisoning of the air, and kill the dwellers on the banks . . . I almost think it is the destiny of science to exterminate the human race. [Thomas Love Peacock (1785-1866)]

[In 1858, Parliament was suspended because of a stench arising from pollution in the river, but its water quality is better now:]

During the 1960s and 1970s, London's two main sewage treatment plants were improved, resulting in a dramatic improvement in water quality and causing many different animals, birds and fish to return. Today, there are 121 different species of fish and more than 170,000 birds in the estuary.

The decline of manufacturing industry in the region, coupled with investments and improvements in wastewater treatment systems, have undoubtedly contributed to an overall improvement in Thames river water quality. [Graham Meller, "Monitoring the Water Quality of the Thames", 29 August 2008.]

Anyone who studies our poisonous drugs, our denatured food, our deathtrap automobiles and houses, our lung-rotting cities, must concede that we accept a good deal of murder . . . simply because it is done to make or save money. [Joy Davidman]

It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it. [Former US Vice President Dan Quayle]
