Briefing: Why Hideyoshi lost his temper

Briefing cat THE JAPANESE warlord Hideyoshi (1536-98) commissioned a colossal statue of Buddha for a shrine in the capital Kyoto. It took 50,000 men five years to build. The warlord himself worked incognito alongside the labourers at times. The work was barely completed when there was a formidable earthquake - the one of 1596. The roof of the shrine crashed down and wrecked the statue. Hideyoshi lost his temper and loosed an arrow at the fallen colossus.
"I put you here at great expense," he shrieked, "and you can't even look after your own temple!"

"EXCEPTIONAL learners ... share a definite set of skills and attitudes that account ... for their success. ... these people had learnt to do for themselves on their own ..." [Ronald Gross, in Peak Learning, p. xiv]
