The Healthful Life

YOGA STUDIES
There are some who look all right, but their cheer betrays them!
These capsules are rooted in the article "The Balanced Life" by Yogananda. It was first published in the first issue of his East West magazine, dated November-December, 1925. - Tormod Kinnes

Neat-Looking, but too Busy

There are some who look normal so far as their outward physical form and appearance is concerned. But they are mentally unsound and deformed. They may be detected and brought into the distinct consciousness — If you were gifted with the power to see their mental bodies, what a surprise and heartache you would have [as you] observe [these people] to be abnormal, diseased and deformed.
Instead, be occupied with constant healthful worth-while activity. For the neat-looking garb of human flesh often covers serious mental maladies, and healthful work in a good environment helps so that you don't have to become one of the sick ones. (3)
Such multitudinous psychological deformities and pathological mental bodies — All spiritual aspirants must guard themselves . . . [in part] by keeping their blood. (5)
One disease is prevalent among those that are mentally and physically idle under the pretext of being too busy with spiritual things. These sufferers neglect the great and small duties — and thus invite a devil. (7) T+

Great Indigestion

Long-continued over-study of all sorts of philosophical principles and treatises . . . kills not only the real hunger for Truth but also destroys the power to discriminate between good and bad teachings. It is proper to assimilate the fair ones so as to test them out by own practical experience.

Spiritual Melancholy

Lead a purposeless life, whim-led, and you don't know when you are going to catch it.

Chronic Worrier

Harbouring constant chronic worldly worries instead of being fought and routed. :)

Mental Insanity

The sufferers of Psychological ambition are warped and distorted to gain fame - that sacrifice, and one-sided in the pursuit of happiness.
Others miss their true goal and can never derive real many-sided satisfaction. nature is many-sided. Human nature is many-sided too.

Church-goer Fanaticism

This religious madness . . . Some start to learn as soon as they concentrate on the universal principles of the imaginary difficulty.
Have civilisation when you learn and plan to work along wide and yet cosy lines as far as possible.

Proper Development

We hope to have a "How-To-Live-School" for all-round development as soon as funds are available and proper interest has been aroused.
Consider properly organized schools as gardens where infant souls are grown and the teachers should never be neglected if they adopt definite measures for developing urgently needed arts and sciences of all-round growth.

Recharging Technique

Learn a technique of relaxation.
Train yourself to sit erect and have your daily bath, keeping the body pores open somehow. Sunlight is good.
Take to physical methods of keeping the senses well intact and stay free from the greedy plans that cheerfulness cover.
Carry out plans that are not to your loss as you advance through practical experience.
Study the art of choosing the right life-companion and learn during sleep.

Methods of fostering social service

What counts for very many is sincerity in seeking personal happiness; genuine interest in the problems of others should not get first place.

Relation of man to God

Be happy always, and go for wealth and the right sorts of happiness. Wealth and fair happiness go along with a free conscience and blessings, and so can liberal study in the Arts and Sciences do too.

Finally

  • Eat good food and don't shut out the ultraviolet rays [don't overtan either. Find a balance].
  • Don't be a prince who forsook his palace and lived so long in a slum that he forgot his original state.
  • Soul is individualized Spirit. Many methods of meditation exist. Among them TM (Transcendental Meditation) has been much researched, and may help a lot.
