A cartoon is an amusing, humorous or satirical drawing, and can be a piece of art also. Some cartoons are comic strips: a comic strip episode is a sequence of drawings about a comic or adventurous situation. In the 19th century, 'cartoons' came to mean humorous illustrations in magazines and newspapers, and in the early 20th century and onward it came to refer to comic strips and animated films. Modern usage refers to drawing or painting intended for frivolity, humour, satire and caricature - possibly combined, as in "frivolous humour".
