Folktales of Italy Italian folktales were put down in writing from the Middle Ages (Decameron, legends), through the 1500s (Straparola), 1600s (Basile) and onwards. Many Italian tales are older than famous French ones - that were borrowed from Italy. Some of the Grimm tales likewise stem from Italian sources. The tales here have been modified somewhat. - Tormod Kinnes
