C. Mantra-Upanishads

Tarasara-Upanishad Selections

Brihaspati asked Yajnavalkya: "That which is called Kurukshetra . . . where should one go in order that he may cognise Kurukshetra and the spiritual seat of all beings?" (124)

Yajnavalkya: "Avimukta is Kurukshetra. One should always be in that place and never leave." *(124)

* Hmm: Varanasi (Benares) is also called Avimukta, "never forsaken by Shiva". If 1,000,000,000 people stayed there, it might become a very crowded place.

Yajnavalkya: "Know that Taraka [Om] alone is Brahman." (125)

Yajnavalkya answered: "The emancipated, true Brahman is myself." (127)

Narayana-Upanishad Selections

From Narayana, the supreme Purusha, emanates Brahma, Prajapati (the divine progenitor). Through Narayana do all the chhandas (Vedas) prosper. The Rigveda teaches this. (128)

Narayana is the only one that is stainless, pure and divine. Whoever knows Him thus, becomes Vishnu Himself. The Yajurveda teaches this. (128)

Vaikuntha (the abode of Vishnu) is this lotus (heart) - the brilliancy of lightning and is known as Parabrahman. The Atharvana Upanishad teaches this. (129)

Kalisantarana-Upanishad Selections

Brahma said: "Listen well to that which all Srutis (the Vedas) keep secret and hidden. It is uttering the name." (130)

Narada asked Brahma: "What is the name?" (130)

Hiranyagarbha (Brahma) said: "Hari Krishna, Krishna, Hari, Hari [with variations. And this is a selection.] These . . . [for long, such as 1,000 times a day for a hundred years]." (130, 131n)

Narada: "O Lord, what are the rules to be observed with reference to it?" (131)

Brahma: "None." (131)

Note. In Rigveda's "Praise of the supreme cosmic being," Hari is the first and most important name of god (Brahman). An alternative name of 'supreme being' after Hari and Purusha, is Narayana according to Narayana Suktam of Yajurveda. In the Hindu tradition, it is often used interchangeably with Vishnu, Krishna and Rama. The word "Hari" is widely used.
