A Japanese proverb, kotowaza, may be expressed in the form of a short saying or a phrase that has established meanings and works by way of hints (inunendos) of the full proverb in question. At times even single words serve in this way. Yet, to be classified as a proverb, the word or phrase is supposed to express a common outlook or regard of something.
