Lahiri Mahasaya (1828–95) is also called Lahiri Baba. Real name: Shyama Charan (Devi Sharman) Lahiri. 'Mahasaya' and 'Baba' are added signs of respect. Shyama Lahiri is known for spreading kriya yoga and initiating about 5,000 persons in it. A misinformed Yogananda writes the guru wrote no books, although he wrote a commentary on the Manu Samhita and a book related to Panini. (See the opening page below for more). His kriya-yogi associations to 26 texts are published in English. Some extracts follow.
"Spiritual teachings . . . cannot throw light on the inner Self, for the Self is Light." - Guru Dev
Lahiri says the same thing among lots of other statements throughout twenty-six commentaries.
